I’m looking forward to the time when my son becomes a helper, even now it happens occasionally.  At this writing he’s almost 6 years old and spends hours with his miniature hammer and full size roofing nails building such things as boats and cars, and begging me to begin building the castle he’s drawn plans for.

I’m still not sure where we are going to build this seven story tall play structure… I’m going to have to consult with the architect and alter the drawings.

Whether he becomes a builder (My competition? Probably…), or does something entirely different, is not a concern to me.  Most days I have the pleasure of enjoying his exuberance and willingness to build boats and gangplanks out of scraps of boards, and teepees out of sticks when we’re out on a walk.

He’s very different from me in many ways, but we both like to work with our hands and create useful things.  Who knows, maybe he’ll talk me into building that seven story play castle some day…

For now teepees still suffice-
